School Lane Field Pond – Update

Residents may have noticed that the pond is looking particularly green at the moment.
The Parish Council has been in contact with Surrey Wildlife Trust regarding the pond and its ongoing condition.

We have been advised that the growth is blanket weed, a natural occurrence that can develop in ponds where nutrient levels are high. The use of barley straw has also been discussed. While this can be effective as a preventative measure, it is most beneficial when introduced in the spring. The current recommendation is therefore to leave the pond as it is for now and reassess the situation next year.

The recent tree works around the pond have been beneficial. Reducing the amount of overhanging vegetation should help to limit the number of leaves falling into the water, reducing future nutrient build-up and supporting the pond’s long-term health.

We recognise how important the pond and its wildlife are to the local community and will continue to monitor the pond and work with ecological experts to ensure it remains a healthy and valuable habitat for local wildlife.
